Scope of this report: “The top” means leadership of a commercial-banking segment, region or business—not bank CEO compensation. Retail branch roles and investment banking are excluded because they operate in different labour markets.

UK commercial banking graduate salary comparison

The most reliable figures come from official bank programme pages. Where a bank does not disclose salary, the report uses clearly labelled market evidence rather than presenting an estimate as fact. See the latest commercial banking graduate schemes before applying.

How the £39,000 benchmark is calculated

Two calculations provide a sensible range rather than a false level of precision:

Disclosed programmes: (£45,000 + £36,000 + £38,000 + £35,000) ÷ 4 = £38,500
Including Barclays midpoint: (£45,000 + £36,000 + £38,000 + £35,000 + £42,000) ÷ 5 = £39,200

Best rounded benchmark: £39,000 base. Lloyds is roughly 24% above the average of NatWest, Santander and HSBC’s disclosed comparable scheme salaries.

The normalised commercial banking salary ladder

Titles are inconsistent. An “associate director” at one bank can perform similar work to a “relationship director” elsewhere. This ladder maps roles by client ownership, credit responsibility and seniority—not title alone.

05 · Total reward

Commercial banking bonuses and benefits

Commercial-banking bonuses are meaningful but normally below investment-banking bonuses. “Total cash” means salary plus annual bonus and cash allowances; it excludes pension and long-term equity.

LevelReasonable bonus rangeWhat drives variation
Graduate / analyst0–10%Scheme structure, bank performance and occasional joining payments.
ARM / credit analyst5–12%Individual performance, quality of execution and team outcome.
Relationship manager8–20%Revenue, portfolio growth, risk performance and client outcomes.
Relationship director15–35%Origination, income delivery, credit quality and broader franchise contribution.
Senior director / head20–60%Segment result, leadership scorecard and bank-wide performance.
MD / business head40–100%+Highly variable; can include deferred awards and long-term incentives.
Do not compare base salary alone. Lloyds advertises employer pension contributions of up to 15% on relevant roles, while Santander advertises up to 12.5%. A £60,000 role with a 15% employer pension can be economically superior to a £65,000 role with weak pension support.
06 · Working hours

Commercial banking working hours in the UK

Commercial banking is materially less intense than investment banking, but client preparation, credit papers, annual reviews and origination targets regularly extend the day beyond contractual hours.

46Estimated average
hours per week
The sensible overall range is 44–48 hours. Regional relationship-led roles often sit below this; large-corporate and transaction-heavy teams can average 48–58 hours, with individual peaks above 60.
RoleTypical actual weekMain pressure points
Graduate in regional / client coverage42–47 hoursCredit papers, training and early client preparation.
Credit analyst / ARM42–48 hoursCredit submissions, annual reviews and transaction deadlines.
SME / mid-market RM40–47 hoursClient travel, networking and year-end reviews.
Relationship director43–50 hoursOrigination targets, complex credits and client events.
Senior / regional director or head45–55 hoursLeadership, escalations, revenue and risk accountability.
Large-corporate / structured teams48–58 hoursTransaction execution; peaks can exceed 60 hours.

How the average was estimated

The available evidence is imperfect because banks do not publish actual hours for UK commercial-banking teams. The unadjusted cross-source average is:

(Lloyds 43.6 + Barclays 45.0 + NatWest 49.8 + Santander 50.7) ÷ 4 = 47.3 hours

NatWest and Santander figures cover whole-bank populations, including longer-hours functions. A modest commercial-banking adjustment produces a central estimate of 46 hours.

Contractual evidence: Lloyds and NatWest have both advertised 35-hour commercial relationship roles. The gap between contracted and actual hours is therefore important when comparing effective hourly pay.
07 · Methodology

How the estimates were constructed

The report prioritises current official bank vacancies and programme pages. Recruiter guides and large employee datasets are used to fill gaps; isolated anonymous claims are not treated as definitive.

1. Match responsibilityRoles are normalised using client ownership, credit responsibility and leadership scope—not title alone.
2. Separate fact from estimateOfficial bands, aggregated averages and modelled senior figures are labelled differently throughout.
3. Use central points carefullySimple band midpoints create transparent benchmarks; they are not employee-weighted payroll averages.

Average calculations

  • Relationship manager: £52,900. Simple average of Lloyds’ £56,207 figure, the NatWest and Santander band midpoints, Barclays’ £46,216 average and HSBC’s £46,775 average.
  • Relationship director: £88,600. Average of the Lloyds regional midpoint (£93,037), NatWest midpoint (£83,900) and Santander S3 midpoint (£88,872).
  • Senior / regional director: about £106,000. Midpoint of Santander’s current S4 senior and regional-director bands; insufficient equivalent disclosure exists for a five-bank average.

Head and MD estimates

Direct commercial-banking leadership salaries are rarely advertised. The model uses current senior-director bands reaching £125,000–£130,000, then benchmarks adjacent credit-risk director and mixed-division MD data. Those higher-paying comparison points are discounted to avoid importing investment-banking pay into domestic commercial banking.

Modelled ranges: £120,000–£180,000 base for a head of commercial segment or region; £160,000–£230,000 for a commercial-banking MD or business head. Central modelling points are £145,000 and £190,000 respectively.
